The old saying is a “picture paints a thousand words” and that continues to hold true, especially with today’s shortened attention spans and so much information be thrown at us daily. It is important that you not only tell your organization’s story with text but also with graphics. Those graphics need to be able to convey what your organization is all about with just a glance, so be thoughtful as you plan out your brochures and printed pieces.

  • Use the organization’s logo wherever it is appropriate. Branding is key in your collateral material – people should be able to tell who the brochure is from immediately.
  • Make sure you have the rights to use photos. With so much information being thrown out into the world without permission, make sure any photos you use in your printed materials are legitimate and not “stolen” from a third party. Also make sure any people you use in your photos have signed a release allowing you to use their image.
  • Capture the essence of the organization. Be thoughtful about any image you use – are they properly reflecting the care, services and products your organization offers?
  • Share the graphics with your online team. We talk over and over about how consistency is important, so be sure to include any graphics from your brochure on your website and other online platforms.
  • Be conscious of colors and shading. Choose graphics that are complementary to the organization’s branding and overall look and feel. Do you work with the elderly? Maybe create a softer, shadowed look. Does your work benefit children? Bright, bold colors bring energy to a piece designed for those services.

Whatever your graphic choice, make sure the layout is pleasing to the eye and is attractive to most. Not sure how you are doing? Ask your colleagues and volunteers what they think of your designs – their feedback can be invaluable.
